came into the area on 197th and DeCatur Ave and it looked severely run down, Bainbridge Ave between 199th and bedford park has a beautuful red brick building that is slanted on the sides art deco style but the usually well maintained building had graffiti in several places

Was DeCatur and 197th always run down or it a recent decline? And that beautiful bldg on Bainbridge with graffiti, who does that, the residents or others who live nearby?

Honestly I dont know to much about this area BUT I do know over the years the Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation has renovated about 95 buildings with more then 2600 units for low and middle income housing, change takes time though and they cant renovate every building in the neighborhood by themselves, but their trying!

Yeah, graffiti is the toughest scourge because sometimes you can spend a lot of time and effort cleaning it up but in a minute it can be messed up again.

What surprises me actually is how many buildings seem to lack graffiti. And yes, there are some beautiful Deco buildings: old as the hills but they just don't build them like they used to. They were built to last, and last they do.

I haven't been to Fordham-Bedford much, but when I have gone I have felt uncomfortable. Lots of people on the corners. Valentine and Decatur, boy oh boy. I have read that about 40% of the crime in the 52nd precinct come from Fordham-Bedford, and so far the only murder in the 52nd this year happened on 198th and Valentine.

You will find graffiti on buildings everywhere. On 231st and Sedgwick, supposedly a good neighborhood, I saw graffiti all over the place. Where I live, graffiti is plentiful. Heck, on 55th and Lexington I saw graffiti. They would clean it up then days, weeks or months later it's back up. Some wait till it builds up a lot, to then remove it. If graffiti was never removed from buildings, then every inch of the building would be covered. Around my way lot of the buildings that have graffiti have been cleaned up.

I do like those nice buildings on the Concourse though.

231st and Sedgwick is where the area declines.

The grafitti on the bainbridge building really marred an otherwise nice block

It's really hard to get grafitti cleaned up if the landlord doesn't do it. I wouldn't take the presence of grafitti as proof that nobody cares. I've called 311 about grafitti and haven't seen any results. As far as I know it's the owner's responsibility and they should get tickets for grafitti that's not removed, but it doesn't seem to be enforced. I still don't understand why people do it. To me it seems like sh***** where you eat.

Yes, it the landlord/owner of the building to remove grafitti but he not obligated by law to do so, as far as know. Sometimes, a nieghborhood association will pressure a landlord to clean it or the association will do it with the landlord's approval as part of a nighborhood beautification program. I know that they often use people who are sentenced to community service to clean up grafitti on public property (parks/subways etc.)

I used to live on Kingsbridge/Valentine & 194 St across from Poe Park. I went to school on E 196 St. Many of those buildings are old and required alot of maintainence back then. I can olny imagine what they look like now. That particular area had the dubious claim of having the greatest concentration of ex-convicts, parolees & probationers in the entire city.
