Sadly *not* to be a Trader Joe's, but CVS instead.

All is not lost however; word on the local streets is that Trader Joe's will be going into that new tower going up on 86th near 1st where the old Gristedes was before that building got torn down.

*Another* CVS? That area is saturated with the things. Doesn't include the two that are along Lexington just three blocks apart in the 80s. Meanwhile, Duane Reades are closing left and right. Am wondering what will replace the DR that has close by 86th and Lex.

Well the area might be saturated with convenience/drug stores but not so much that stretch of Second Avenue.

There is a 24 hour DR on 79th and Second, and another (24 hour) Rite Aid across the street @ 80th, but that is about it. Haven't looked but don't know if that DR on 86th across from Fairway is still open, even if so the space is small.

You have a "Love" type discount store on 86th between Second and First (or is it gone as well?), and then a DR on 86th and First.

Still that leaves the nearest 24/7 DR or any other similar type store at 87th and Third, not far but not exactly close. Going up Second towards 96th there is nothing IIRC, so that is that.

My guess is this CVS will follow the current trend of DR, Rite Aid, Walgreens, etc... and be a mix of pharmacy, convenience store, supermarket, etc... If open 24/7 (assuming it will) there probably will be a lot of business.

Am totally feeling old as remember when there was a hardware type store in that space. Had just moved to the UES and wanted a heater because my apartment was freezing in winter. It still had then the old original windows and you could feel the wind blowing through across the living room. Building put in new windows by the next winter and really haven't used the thing since.

It is.

I think the area needs another drug store as much as it needs another pigeon.
I'm with Pierpont: closing a grocery store to convert it to yet another drug store is NOT doing a service to the community. The only WORSE waste of the space would be another f**king bank branch.

Hmmm, I did not realize they tore down the old Gristedes?????
