Just a question that's actually inspired from another thread. I'm thinking about getting a motorbike and would like to know what your experience is with:

Costs/Insurance
Parking/Peace of mind regarding stealing
Likelihood of accidents
Overall experience

I'm really thinking about getting one but not sure if it's even worth it. It may be a pipe dream but in the meantime I shall study the DMV manual.

I've been riding almost daily from Queens to Manhattan for 2 years now.

Costs/Insurance - $240 for full-coverage per year with State Farm, $10 yearly inspection and ~$35 for registration per year
Parking/Peace of mind regarding stealing - Finding parking is a non-issue and had to no issues in regards to theft. I live and work in areas of relative low-crime, however.
Likelihood of accidents - That's a function of a number of factors, probably biggest on of which is you, your riding ability and visibility level to other drivers, and where you drive. Do you give yourself outs for when someone makes a dangerous maneuver in front of you? Do you weave through traffic at 80mph+ on a busy BQE highway?
Overall experience - Love it. I wish more people did it as is the case in Europe (e.g. Barcelona)

I think the biggest barrier to entry for most is actually getting the motorcycle license. Best way to do it is to spend the $350 and take the 2day Motorcycle Safety School course, after which you don't have to do the road test at the DMV.

FYI - the toll for MTA owned bridges and tunnels is reduced by almost 50% for motorcycle, unlike the Port Authority owned crossings (ARGGGG).

$240 a year for full coverage in NYC ? Amazing.
It's so easy to steal a motorcycle. I know several who have had theirs stolen.
My son is paying $70 a month for minimum coverage with Geico. He has had 2 tickets though.
