I'd rather be safe and commute more. $1400 has to get you something in a (slightly) better area. Maybe a jr. 4?
$1400 will get her a one bedroom, even in areas like Bedford Park and Norwood. Rents in the Bronx have skyrocketed. Can look online and see for yourself. Two bedrooms are now over $1600 in Norwood. Only hope for OP would be to look for a place without a broker where some homeowner wants to rent out their space for less.

Right, I think it'd be tough, but I don't think it's unreasonable that she might luck out and find a two bedroom in that budget in Bedford Park or Norwood. Possible, but it'll take some legwork and luck. Both are much nicer places than Highbridge though, so to me it seems worth it to try.

that's what I was thinking - renting from a homeowner. damn @ rents being so high these days, even in ghetto areas.

Am in agreement. Question is how long would such a search take? Cannot say since have never looked for a place without a broker. Am thinking the OP would likely have to up their budget to something around $1600 for a two bedroom and have paperwork in hand in case needed. With such a deal am sure others would be waiting to pounce on the opportunity.
