this might be a stupid question but I'm just curious, as I'm looking around for apartments, the one noticeable thing is that it seems like most buildings don't have central AC, unless you're in a high end luxury building and what not but for most of what I see, everyone has their own individual window unit, or in home portable unit, etc.
My question is, in the summer time in these buildings, are there a lot of power outages due to so much power being consumed? I mean take a building that has 100 units, along with 100 individual ac units pulling power, and multiply that by the millions of buildings in this city, that's gotta be some serious power drain, not to mention, adding in TV's, and whatever else electronics.
It's hard to believe that power doesn't consistently go out frequently but i could be wrong. Maybe NYC has found a way to power all this electricity demand...or the breakers in these buildings can handle a whole lot of power...
The reason i'm asking is because if this is a common issue, is it more common in certain buildings? anything to watch for when touring an apartment? There's no point to have an AC if the power just goes out all the time...right? haha
Also, for window ac needs, make sure the apartment has regular wide windows, that go up and down, as opposed to sideways. Casement, narrow ac is harder to find these days.

New York City/Con Edison has done a pretty good job over the past few decades of upgrading the power grid/supply to handle peak summer demand. That being said you will still see isolated blackouts in various neighborhoods and or reduction in power (brown outs) but these happen far less frequently than in past.
Even when such events do happen they normally occur after several days of intense heat (heat wave) where temps have remained at 90F or above.
Out on Staten Island you get isolated blackouts due to equipment failures during very hot weather. Just a few weeks ago there was a major outage when a manhole cover blew after a transformer/wire fire underground.
I lived in an older tenement from 2001-2005 and anytime anyone (except the favored people who already lived in the building. aka very long time tenants) would put in an AC and turn it on it would cause the breaks to short or whatever. It was rampant in my building, but who knows how long the electrical wasnt updated for because they sold the building and turned it into luxury apartments with central air. It depends on the building. People telling you it's all good. um.... not always, especially in some shady older rentals in private homes.
although i am sure 99.9% of the time you're okay. just sharing my one living situation where it wasn't. I also lived in an older house in jersey where if more than one person had an ac running it would constantly blow out fuses.
I don't think the city would function in the summer if A/Cs regularly went out due to power outages. People are already tense enough around here as it is!
