Growing up knew people who either themselves or family members (mostly in Brooklyn and Staten Island) had fig trees growing in their back yards.
These were all IA families and or persons who bough homes that once were occupied by same. Didn't think fig trees grew in NYC climate but obviously they did.
I have a couple of fig trees in my yard and they do just fine here. I don't even have to wrap them up in the winter. As for OP, I guess the best bet would be Fairway, Trader Joe's or Wjole Foods.

Growing up, my (Italian) grandfather always had a fig tree in our backyard in North Jersey. He did wrap it all up each winter. The part of Italy that he was from had cold winters so he knew all about it.
I'm enjoying some black figs from Whole Foods now.

Maybe it's me. but ever got the allure of figs. Maybe a couple of Fig Newton cookies now and then, but that was about it.
Now if anyone has a contact for some good homemade Limoncello, now then we can talk. *LOL*
