Well, I was just a kid back then, but I asked my mother, "Mom, why are all these women standing here doing nothing? And she said, "Shut your mouth!!"

The Bronx for sure, particularly neighborhoods like Melrose, Morrisianna, Tremont, Fordham, Highbridge, Hunts Point, West Farms, and Norwood.

If you want a place outside of NYC try Baltimore, Philly, Camden and Newark in New Jersey.

That's why I think he or she is trolling

I would like to think most tourists know better than to only check out Times Square.

My recommendation for a gritty looking neighborhood would be the LES, although it's super gentrified it still has an old school look to it in terms of architecture. And at night it's pretty lively.

Maybe Tel Aviv. It has some of the "excess" and party feel of the 80s NYC. (plus a beach!)
But it too is getting very expensive...
Tel Aviv is VERY expensive, you're right about that. In fact, I would say it's more expensive than Manhattan, if you look at the price per square foot. (though in Manhattan the maintenance fees are usually quite high, so it balances out, I guess). In NYC, if you leave Manhattan you can find some very reasonably priced smaller apartments in places like Staten Island, or safe parts of Queens, for example. In Tel Aviv, even in the less desirable parts of South Tel Aviv, it's still going to be expensive. Heck, even in Rehovot, which is 50 miles away from TA, you'd still have to pay $400,000 for a 3-bedroom apartment that would be small by American standards, in an older walk-up building with no special amenities (no doorman, no garden, no pool, etc).

I'm sure you're right. Israel is very expensive. (Meanwhile salaries are 1/3 to 1/2 what they are here in the U.S....)

Absolutely. Salaries are much lower. However, quality education is much, much cheaper - public schools & then universities. Healthcare is pretty much socialized, and it does work pretty well.

But yes, the cost of housing is a big problem at the moment; they are building a ton of new apartment complexes (30,000 new apartments being built in Ashkelon, 35,000 in Ashdod, 15,000 in Kyriat Gat, etc), so hopefully this will help drive the prices down.

The OP wants 2000+ murders a year? Open street drug dealing? Hookers on every street corner in a number of neighborhoods? Getting mugged being a right of passage?

He can keep NYC in the '80. It's much better now.
