I've had my NY State driver's license for years now. The problem is that recently, when I went to get a motorcycle permit, they sent me a new license, but instead of it saying anything about me having a driver's license, it just reads, "Permit" on top, and then class M. Nowhere does it say anything about my driver's license - and then to top it off, the letter reads, "This document replaces all your other documents, please destroy your previously issued documents" or something to that effect.

Did I make a mistake in filling out the application at the DMV, or can I still drive a car?

You're fine. It will show up in a cop's computer that you have a regular driver's license should the need arise.

It's not a license until you take a road test or the msf waiver course instead of the road test. Only then can you go to the DMV and have it added to your regular driver's license. Your regular driver's license insn't affected by your permit.
