In my opinion the drug use in Manhattan is low key. They may casually and cautiously ask people if they would like anything. Ive lived in other cities where it is hardcore and blatant, screaming at potential clients down the street and they sling heroin and crack like that. Not the kind of places that sell pot. They sell heroin and crack and its not in nice areas with hundreds of amenities like West 4th Street. I know what you mean at night it feels seedy but it could be much worse.
On west 4th Ive seen needles on the ground but its not too common. I have seen people nodding out near the basketball court but they are passive and low key. Ive lived in cities where addicts will try opening drivers side doors at stop lights to claw away at people assaulting them in broad day light to find money. And they will smash car windows with anything they can find, in moving vehicles too. In comparison to other crime city areas, The Village is not too bad.
Baltimore and Philadelphia are way more blantant in it's drug game. Far more dangerous cities too vs NYC.
Before dumping a rhubarb like this, I think you need to quantify and prove the point. What neighborhoods i GV more dangerous than, and by what statistics. I bet if you look at the numbers, GV will prove much safe than most neighborhoods in NYC.

Are the criminals mostly coming from other areas of NYC, or are they locals?
Any ideas?
And re. the previously cited stats- Midtown is technically the most "high crime" portion of the city when you count all crime, because Midtown is super-packed with outsiders. So yeah, I could see the Village being "high crime" because it's always packed.
But that doesn't mean the Village is "unsafe"; just that a super-crowded area will always have a litany of petty crimes.
But major crimes that people actually fear (armed robbery, rape, murder, etc) are almost always in bad neighborhoods nowhere near Manhattan. People don't typically fear vandalism, vagrancy and other "quality of life" crimes in the same way, and yeah, those types of crimes are most common in Manhattan.
No it isn't. I went to CompStat. In raw numbers it's lower than the Upper East Side, which isn't known for being a hotbed of crime. GV is likely one of the safer neighborhoods in the city.
You're making this up.

The Village has always been a haven for drifters and hustlers. It’s always had a seedy underbelly. There have always been desperate people lurking around looking for a score of some kind.
The bourgeois-ification marching down from Greenwich Ave. hasn't fully overwhelmed that area around the Cage, and the ongoing retail blight doesn't help.
