The daily freebie AM NY for once did a decent article, writing up the Amazon bid with a reasonable amount of skepticism. (The paper headline is "City Sparkles for Amazon"; the online headline is "Amazon HQ2 bid has some New Yorkers worried about wages, incentives.")
The state is offering incentives to any qualified metro area submitting proposals to Amazon, but would not disclose details, citing the competitive nature of the HQ2 search process. The city does not plan to offer any additional benefits it has discretion over, according to its Economic Development Corporation.
What do you think? I'm very dubious about their claim that there will be 50,000 with an average salary of over $100,000. Keep in mind that this is the company that preferred to let employees pass out from the heat rather than use air conditioning. That's apart from my overall wariness about a company that has fingers in so many pies and that has already been undermining the book business, which was one of NYC's glories. Once Amazon is even more firmly entrenched in people's consciousness, I foresee even more stores going under, especially bookstores.

Okay, but I don't think they'd be techs, I don't think they'd necessarily be moving here (i.e. they'd be workers already here), and I think Amazon is headquartered in Washington, not California.
From looking at what Amazon wants. Amazon is not looking to move into a big city like NYC. It looks like amazon wants to move near to a big city, or a small midsized city like Boston for example. Most of these tech companies are located in suburbs that are near big city.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure NYC won't get the Amazon headquarters. A smaller city like Philly, Boston, or Atlanta will get it.
NJ will get it because they offered the biggest tax break right now. Christie knew NJ lost the Tesla factory because Nevada gave Tesla the biggest tax deal.
I personally don't want Amazon here, it will only make the state even more harder to travel and live.
It will happen because many of the states in the running are Republican and not Democrat strongholds.
Newark will get the pick over Camden, NJ for Amazon.
The jobs are going to go somewhere, and Amazon is going to keep on growing, whether or not it has a big presence in NYC. Whatever negatives Amazon creates in terms of displacing legacy retail, NYC is still going to deal with. We might as well have the benefit that having the higher level tech and executive level jobs here would provide.
Winning the bid would also increase NYC's importance as a tech hub. This will have a secondary effect beyond the Amazon jobs.

I'm not sure if their intent is to make it a big tech hub, or more of a warehouse/fulfillment hub.
They need to bring a Walmart into the city(Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and/or the Bronx) rather than Amazon HQ. I welcome affordable Brick/Mortars.. right now most/all Walmart stores require you to have a car to get there. it freaking sucks for people that rely on public transportations.
