I will be working in North Jersey soon, and want to move into manhattan if possible. I have been looking for cheap-ish places (my salary is ~65k, and we are looking at places that will end up costing me about 1.2k/month) on the upper east side (I can pretty much only live on the east side in manhattan because of my roommates), in the low-mid 90's.

My question is, as someone who is not very experienced with NYC, is the traffic from my garage on the upper east side to NJ going to be terrible? The only reason I'm considering living on the upper east side is because I was told the traffic would actually not be very bad. How is it going over the bridge/I-95, or FDR Dr? If anyone could roughly tell me how long it would take me to get to paramus that'd be great.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I did that (albeit from the West Side) for almost four years.

Going to work wasn't an issue, as long as I went early...at 6:30. Getting home was another issue...until I found the three secret words: George Washington Bridge. Yes, it's farther, BUT it's faster. You can go across the bridge and head toward the Cross Bronx, getting off onto the Harlem River Drive and going downtown from there. The Lincoln/Holland tunnels easily made for a 2.5 hour trip home. And with the GWB I was home in 30 minutes. Out of the way, but worth it.

Definitely to get to Paramus would be to take the GWB

Straight up the Harlem River Drive to the GWB to I 80 to 17
