So I take the Q back and forth from Penn station(lirr) to 96th st stop. Was wondering if transferring at 42nd from or to the Q would be quicker than taking the Q all the way than habiing to walk from or to Herald Square. Anyone try this? Thanks

Made the mistake once of transferring at 42nd/Port Authority from the "A" train to get the "Q", never again.

It is one of the most longest underground walks through a maze of tunnels, stairs, and so forth in crowded, dank, and quite honestly disgusting conditions.

When going to 34th, Far West Side, Chelsea, etc... have and continue to just take the "Q" and get off at 34th, then walk or maybe transfer to a cross town bus. Coming back do the same as just cannot nor will not make that underground transfer again at 42nd/PABT.

Thing is walking to Herald Square isn't much better. Am thinking the OP could get the 1 2 or 3 or whatever to 42nd and then huff it over to the Q from there. If timed right, and if the OP gets on in the car closest to make the transfer at 42nd, may be quicker. All depends on when the OP travels. Am here to tell you... Times Square can be a madhouse.

What does Google Maps tell you? They usually give alternate routes and breakdown estimated transit time and walk time.

I wouldn't give up being on a train that was working, moving... to walk a block underneath to get on another train that may have delays, be stuck, so full you can't get on, etc. Say put and get off at 34th and walk down 31, 32, or 33 street.

Yes I was thinking the 1,2 or 3.
