I'm relocating to NYC for work and need a bit of advice on areas to live. I will be making a base salary of 112k and working in the financial district. I am single, 29, and looking to live in a vibrant neighborhood with a very close commute to work.
I plan on budgeting $1500-$1800 a month on rent (plan on living with roommates). Would prefer to live in lower Manhattan, preferably within 15 mins of WTC. Any good neighborhood to focus on? Is my rent budget reasonable?
Salary question: is it reasonable to save on 112k salary in NYC (I'm hoping to save $1,000 a month outside of 401k). Is this crazy?

You're making a $112,000 a year and want to live with rommates? What is wrong with people?? No wonder rents are out of control. All sorts of people *shacking* up.
I would ideally get a studio but really want to live in lower Manhattan, close to work. It's my understanding that getting a studio apartment in lower Manhattan would run at least $2,300 a month. I have CC debt and student loans, so would prefer to not pay more than $1,800 a month.

With a budget of $1800, could get a nice studio, even in Manhattan. So what you have student loans and credit cards. Don't you have any dignity? You're making six figures and you want to live with rommates and you're almost 30. Think about that. So you're fine bringing chicks home with your rommates being there? Always thought the point of making so much was to have *Independence*.
Could also commute from across the river and be close to Lower Manhattan.
Would prefer to live in lower Manhattan than commute from Jersey City/Hoboken, at least for my first is it possible to get a studio in lower Manhattan for under $1800 a month? I have not seen anything in that range online...
Thanks for the replies everyone! Will be working a lot of hours, so I want to be within a 15-20 minute commute of work. Definitely want to be in Manhattan, even if it's at the expense of having roommates. .
