I'm in need of basic craft supplies (popsicle sticks, glue gun, etc.), but don't know where to find them. I'd really prefer to stay in Manhattan, but can travel to close-in locations in the other boros. However, I can't drive anywhere (no car), and don't want to spend three hours on the LIRR just to get these, so whatever store I visit needs to be fairly close.

Any suggestions?

There is a michaels - a huge suburban type craft store in Woodside near the Astoria/Woodside border. I believe it's about a block from the Northern Blvd stop on the RGV train. I am guessing this is about 15 minutes on the train from midtown east but you'd have to check.

The other option is Pearl Arts and Crafts on Canal St. They should have everything you need. Pearl is huge (mainly vertically) and will have everything as well but for me I try to avoid the place because it always seems cramped and difficult to maneuver and browse in.

Pearl actually has a dedicated crafts store across the street behind the crazy main store.
I've also occasionally found basic craft supplies at Staples - they cater to a lot of teachers.

I <*heart*> Michaels! I looked them up online, but didn't see a local store listed. Thanks for the info!

I've tried Staples, but they didn't have the specific crafts I'm looking for.

Thanks, though, for the referral to Pearl -- I'll definitely give them a look-see.

Have you checked out Lee's Art Supplies near Carnegie Hall? It's a big store (for Manh.) and has a nice craft-supply dept. in the rear.

Lee's Art Supplies is actually a pretty good option, and there's nothing like it anywhere nearby. Most of the art supply places tend to be lower down - Union Square, Chelsea, Chinatown, Soho.

They also carry craft supplies at Paper Presentation on 18th St. (Down the block from City Bakery.)

The stock is pretty hit or miss, but it's worth stopping buy if you are in the neighborhood. I just got some refills for my glue gun there.

I will vouch for Lee's Art Supplies also. It really is a good store for Crafts. If they don't have what you need, then Pearl's would also be a good option. I have been to both stores and found what I was looking for.
