there is no plea bargaining in nyc at all . there is only 100% guilty or 100% innocent .

there is not even a court and the hearing officer had no latitude to cut a thing down . i had a clean record for 25 years . it meant nothing .

if you were slightly over a lawyer can argue that the radar may be off 5 mph or so and if you were going to get more points they can maybe reduce it , but you were clearly in 6 point territory and you were pretty far over .

keep in mind that the longer you delay ,the longer a conviction will haunt you . unlike points which come off 18 months from the ticket date and are a dmv thing ,convictions can haunt you for up to almost 4 years from DATE OF CONVICTION and that is what the insurer sees. insurers don't know from dmv points . they have their own rating system for convictions .

people shoot themselves in the foot all the time outside nyc . they plea bargain down for a seat belt ticket because it is no points .

big deal , that is not what the insurer goes by . to them no seat belt is a serious conviction and may weigh very heavy in your insurance score ..

That doesn't sound right, a $500 fine sounds like you had priors

edit: and actually looking at the law the maximum fine for between 10 to 30 over the limit is $300:

"(ii) Where the court or tribunal records or enters that the speed upon which the conviction was based exceeded the applicable speed limit by more than ten miles per hour but not more than thirty miles per hour, by a fine of not less than ninety nor more than three hundred dollars or by imprisonment for not more than fifteen days or by both such fine and imprisonment;"

NYS GTSC - Vehicle & Traffic Law - Article 30
Good catch and assuming the OP does have priors that warranted a higher fine, they can forget about getting it reduced

nope , it is correct . it is 200 bucks for the ticket and 100 a year driver surcharge for 3 years . i got that too with my 6 point speeding ticket

The Driver Responsibility Assessment Fee is applicable when you receive six or more points on your New York driving record during a period of 18 months, and the violations occurred in NY State, Quebec or Ontario. The annual fee is $100 per year for three years, totaling $300.

what do you mean by 100 a year, are you talking about the DMV registration assessment fine based on points?

it has nothing to do with your regi , you don't even have to own a car .

. the 3 year , 100 dollar a year surcharge for 6 points or more can be paid all at once like i did , 500 bucks at one shot for ticket and assessments or you get a separate bill for 3 years at 100 bucks each . 1 6 point ticket makes you a winner .

i did not need to get a reminder of the incident every year so i elected to pay it at once . .

that's wacky, and why would you pay that up front

OP needs to get a court date and keep pushing it hoping the cop doesn't show up or he shows up drunk

i told you why . who cares , it is an extra 200 bucks up front . i just wanted it to be done . nothing whacky about paying it .

delaying may work or it may just make this ticket stick around that much longer once you are convicted .

convictions go by date of conviction and stay on your record for up to 4 years from date of conviction , not date of ticket .

that means if you want to shop for cheaper rates it really pushes the date out .

I heard, you want to get it over with. I'll take the meager interest instead of giving it to Cuomo on principle

will wait to hear from OP if that's the assessment surcharge or not, if from out of state that shouldn't apply
