I wouldn't worry too much about the people buried in the cemetery. Their at peace.
In general, Glendale is considered to be a pretty safe neighborhood. Only part that might be a little sketchy would be by the Bushwick border, but even over there has seen a fair amount of gentrification from Ridgewood.
I am not worried about people buried there although I have to admit it is a depressing sight. I am more concerned about any illegal activities in the area after dark.
I lived in a basement studio in Dyker Heights a long time ago when I was just getting out on my own....it wasn't pleasant. On cold days, the floor was always freezing, and on rainy/humid days it felt unbearably damp. Those flying water-bugs were a common sight too, like StormGal mentioned.
I suppose if the basement is nicely finished with proper flooring and insulation (and mold abatement), its different. But most basic basement apartments I've seen are pretty grungy and moldy.
basements suck, you will get poor sunlight, and the apartment may get more dust, and when the shades are open, people can just walk by and look in. freakin hate it!
My friend lives in a basement in Queens. It's a studio apartment basically. Bedroom/living room with enough space for dressers, TV, air mattress when I stay over. She has a kitchen with stove, fridge, etc and a bathroom.
Separate entrance from outside. Locked entrance from house. She pays like $800.

LOl! this is so true. People just walk by and look in.

It is nicely finished but the lack of light makes it looks very depressing though.
It sounds like living in a basement is not a good experience after all.
If you can afford $1250, why not look at roommate situations? For that amount, you might even be able to find a room with a private bathroom in an area with decent transportation. I know roommate situations are not ideal, but neither is a basement. You might find that the roommate situation is preferable. Just something to think about.
