I saw Curtis Sliwa himself on the Q23 bus a few years ago. Riding as a regular passenger, not as an "angel". He had the kangol hat on but wasn't in full Guardian Angels garb. He was talking on a flip phone and looked very very pissed off.

Curtis is a showman. I wonder if the voice he's used in public for almost 40 years is his real voice. The "street tough guy" voice may just be part of the persona he created. He reminds me of Bo Dietl, another guy who seems to have made a public persona with his manner of speech and mannerisms. If you saw some regular person talking like Curtis or Bo you might wonder if they were a bit "slow", which Curtis and Bo obviously are not.
I saw him once at some fall festival at the Queens Botanical Gardens of all places. No one recognized him except my mom. He looked kind of bummed about that.
If he was in a red beret, I think any New Yorker over 30 would recognize him. Outside of his uniform he just looks like any other guy, of course. Why would he be recognized?
