Trust me when I say this, as I lived through it. It sucked! So much filth and lawless attitude.
Remember the song ,"the message" ...broken bottles everywhere, people pissing in the streets like they just don't care... It was just that in the subways. You don't need this nostalgia.
Yeah, well there's a trade off.
Right now, most of the city is restricted to yuppies, trust fund kids and welfare recipients. NYC used to be a place where teachers, cops, and shopkeepers could live. Artists and musicians brought creative energy to the city.
Now its just money makers and money takers. Grandmaster Flash could probably do something with that, too.

It did suck. I witnessed a robbery in the street outside my house one night when I was a kid, and my mother turned out the kitchen lights so that they wouldn't spot us and come try to rob our house next. Thanks but no thanks.

Okay, but just because it's before you were born, a mere 30 years ago, doesn't necessarily make it "old." When I saw the heading "Old New York City," I perked up, thinking it was from the 19th century.
I've just spent close to half an hour just watching the video and matching up locations on Google Maps and seeing how much things have changed. The Ace Car Wash at 6702 New Utrecht Avenue apparently became a different car wash (Hand Car Wash) and it's got a "for lease" sign on it as of September 2014. Wonder what that is now.
There's a shot on the D train of the people in the video passing by Loew's Oriental Theater at 1832 86th Street. Looks like it's a Marshall's store now as of August 2014. Funny, in June 1987 the marquee said it was showing "Beverly Hills Cop II" & "The Untouchables".
I lived in Queens from 1994-2001 and I miss New York so badly. I really do. Amazing to see how much things have changed. So much graffiti on the subway. What year did they start cleaning up?
Anyone else have videos such as this?
Wow,Michael Musto and Albert Crudo riding to Coney Island in an early Nelson Sullivan video to boot! before any of them was too well known.Great. So much 1980's NY all in one!

Cops make plenty of money and many choose to live in NYC. A lot of them choose to live in the suburbs because they prefer the suburban lifestyle.

This is how NYC looked before gentrification. A dirty, crime infested shiite hole! Now you know why I'm in favor of NYC gentrifying. It's easier on the eyes and less hood rats!

Flip side is, back then the middle class could afford to buy a home in a decent area. Wages were more in line with cost of living. Today you can make 100k/year and still need a roommate to get by depending on where you reside.

Ah, yea, Olde New-Yorke Towne. How I remembyre thee...
The faintly sweet and smoky aroma of roastinge Chestnutyes, tossing a ha'penny to the organ grindere's monkeye.
And there! The gentle din of competeing B-boy crewes, battlynge on the corner, their beat-boxes emittynge the pulsynge refrain of Kraftwerk remixyes as they displayede theyr traditionale dance-ing skylls on the discardede cardborde cartones of ice-boxyes and goadynge one-another with theyr verbale ripostes!
