I was talking to a friend about this, adn I get that anti-catholicism in the mainstream may have existed at some point in the city, but I think those days are long gone.
I definitely feel that I got some pushback as a youth in a bygone era in the inland parts of socal and I somewhat remember a few odd comments from a stint in the panhandle portion of Virginia, but I find it hard to believe that this really exists in any significant form in NYC. My guesd is that this does not exist, but I’m curious about if anyone at all has any experience of this
Of course there is still to some extent a "feeling" against Catholics.
Saint Vincent's hospital was largely vilified by many local West Village residents, but Lenox Hill Hospital was saved.
It was rather interesting to hear so many younger gays come out against Saint Vincent's, the RC Catholic healthcare system overall and really members of that faith in general. Say this because it was the RC hospitals that took HIV/AIDs patients when other places were throwing them to the curb. Until the practice was outlawed many NYC hospitals would put HIV/AIDS patients in ambulances and or otherwise send/dump them at Catholic hospitals.
interesting topic. the catholic church in NYC is too hooked up with politics , to force any backlash. And way too many people ,from different walks of life are catholic and embrace and defend it. A very large portion of the western hemisphere are Catholic, From the US down to Argentina. So , no , I never heard of any negative comments . But there were/still is some wise cracks thrown around about "boy loving priest" , "horny Catholic School Girls", "soft catholic school boys". no one group is immune from a nasty joke, we are nyers, that is what we do!
but with all this "removing "of statues of Columbus, and other historic American figures, it is only a matter of time that these people will ask the same from the Catholic Church. After all, it was the Catholic Church, that tagged along with the explorers of the Americas, forcing religion to control the natives. Catholic Church was there for the slave trading, burning of villages, and exploitation of the new found land. If you research old portraits of Bishops, you will see them draped in gold, wearing fine clothes, living large and in charge. the Vatican made lots of money when they spread the word in north and south america, no one can deny their wealth and clout.
Anti-Catholic sentiments were basically the foundation of the United States. The country was a offshoot from a fundamentalist Anti-Catholic country England. The folks that founded the colonies were the most extreme and fundamentalist anti-catholics from England, they were so extreme that even those that had an extreme hatred of Catholics expelled them!
At this point in American history the Catholics are the losers in the culture wars and were largely exiled from their close knit urban enclaves to be marinated in Americanism in the suburbs. The suburbanization of American cities post WWII? Largely a social program to break up ethic urban neighboorhoods and Americanize the ethnics while rural southern protestants became associated with urban neighboorhoods. Here in New York the hate of Catholics is hidden in American history, you may read about it in euphemisms like the crushing of evil Tammany Hall.
To be Catholic now is completly unacceptable:
- every social value of modern American society is diametrically opposed to American social values as promoted by ruling class media and policy
- values the collective over the individual, many times that manifests itself in the individual preying on the collective. In a Catholic country a vice like internet porns would be shut down. They would view the pornographer as a vulture exploiting the weaknesses of men. Here it is a right for the individual to exploit that known weakness, in the same way cig produces exploit a known collective weakness to nicotine addiction
-expressing catholic views in polite society -like marriage is man and women would be met with harsh scorn
-a Catholic employer who expressed Catholic views would certainly face lawsuits from people forcing ruling class policy and philosophy. E.g. not recognizing gay marriages or covering abortion is not tolerated. These catholic views are basically thoughtcrimes at this point.
-even gluten allergies are a form of anti-catholic sentiment. The Roman empire - which continues this day as the Christian Church was founded on three elements:
-Roman Law
-clean drinking water technology
-ample supply of free wheat flour for bread (gluten)
Gluten allergy (this thing is a fad) is a phisical manifestation of the rejection of anything Catholic...

I'm not sure if it exist in NYC. Catholicism is one of the three big denominations in NYC, the other being Judaism, and the later being Protestant Secretariats mainly lead by Black Americans from the South and their declining WASP counterparts. I know in the 19th century, their was a thing called the great awakening which fueled plenty of Anti-Catholic sentiments across America. America as a whole is still is very anti-Catholic. America only had one Catholic President and that was JFK, and him being Catholic angered plenty of Protestants especially those in the South, both whites and blacks alike. I suspect the US will not have another Catholic president for a long time due to the nature of Anti-Catholicism that still exist in regions of this country. America will most likely elect a black protestant over a Catholic any day. Why Protestant? Protestants have American values or more aligned with American values, while Catholics due not to a certain extent.
As for NYC being anti-Catholic? I'm not sure. With boatloads of Mexicans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Haitians, Poles, Baltics, Old school and declining Old Guard Catholic immigrant whites Portuguese, Italian and Irish in this city. Catholic Church is a major force in this city. I myself is also a Catholic through my Portuguese heritage, and what have been bestowed to me by my faith and upbringing is very different than Protestantism that reigns supreme in America. People may have private bias of Catholics. A good example of this is a buddy of mines who dated a Black American woman, while he is Puerto Rican. The black American woman father did not approve of her daughter being with a Puerto Rican due to the fact that he is Catholic. My boy tapped that black booty so much, that his girlfriend become pregnant. The big problem was after the pregnancy, will the child be Catholic, or Baptist. Puerto Rican family wanted the child to be Catholic, while the Black American family wanted the baby to be Baptist. Even I myself, my Uncle told me to stick with my Catholic women.Thankfully we live in a city that is very open minded about faith. This open mindedness on faith has existed in the Northeast since the colonization of the 13 colonies. Since NYC was founded in the name of money by the Dutch, Dutch believed in religious tolerance. This religious tolerance is also enhanced by having nearby cities such as Boston and Philly who also professed religious freedom due to persecutions going on in Britain. Much of the Northeast region is very religiously tolerant.
I've noticed it. I'm not of any particular faith, but I've noticed that Catholics are generally considered low class peoples, urban rubes for the part. But that sentiment seems to come from yunnie snobs mostly whose holy trinity consists of apple, whole foods, and facebook.
Catholics are morons, Christians are morons, Muslins are morons, Scientologists are morons.
Religions are for those who fear death and are willing to pay people to mesmerize them into complacency.
I'd argue heavily that atheists are the complete morons. Life came from somewhere, to argue otherwise is to deny your own existence. We run into problems when people start pretending they know who god is
