Am wondering why the father was taken all the way to SI Hospital. Don't any of the hospitals in Brooklyn have top tier burn units?
SIUH-N is THE burn unit for Brooklyn and SI. It's considered one of the best in the city. My mother worked there for quite awhile and has a LOT of stories similar to this one. That's about all I'll say...
To show up where and do what? This level of Orthodox cheaps out by not getting electric smoke/fire detectors on each floor or not getting smoke/fire detectors on each floor as there has been situations where the battery was dying during the sabbath and they couldn't stop the chirping sound until the sabbath was over (switching electricity on/off is a sabbath violation and removing the battery is equivalent to shutting off electricity). Fire education is considered secular education and thus is not part of their education curriculum which is nearly all related to religion.
They can't check the the batteries in the smoke detectors before the Sabbath?
I had a college roommate who thought it was fine to leave a menorah with real candles lit, including when we all went out of the suite to go to the dining hall. When I said it wasn't a good idea, she balked. Eventually we compromised and she left the lit menorah in our shower stall, so if it fell over, it wouldn't start a fire.
I'm actually kind of surprised (in hindsight) that the college did not have any firm rules set out for such things.
I had just moved out of the Hunter College dorms at Brookdale (next to Bellevue [yes, where the homeless intake shelter is!]) back when some girl set the place on fire accidentally with her candles (don't know if it was religious).
Unfortunately, there's just no way of making people not have candles and using them.

Interesting, had no idea. Thanks for the update.
Still sounds like a very long way to travel especially given traffic on BQE, Belt, VZNB and or Hylan Blvd.

Distance wise it's pretty short (12 miles), the speed limit is not a factor and not stopping for the toll helps; less than a half hour. Also it's Ocean pkwy, Belt, VZ, and a few blocks/streets in each borough.
The menorah was an oil lamp, plenty of fuel to get the fire started. No smoke detectors on the bedroom floor, completely devastating
Tragic and so preventable. Every time I hear a story like this and the previous one with the fire caused by the hot plate I want to scream. Ugh.
