It's the last of the great Fourth Avenue bookstores, and one of the best in the country.

Ow wow! So sad to hear that. I love that store. It's one of the last great NYC institutions that we have left.

Yeah. Was glad the Strand was still around when Coliseum Books closed. That was another place I loved.

The Coliseum was also great because of its location!

God, so many places gone.

Great bookstore, but I couldn't stand a single person that worked there. Entitled weirdo snobs who only worked in bookstores just to be rude and snobby to people while their bank accounts were padded by their rich relatives via trust funds. I just found so many people that worked there to be terrible a-holes.

What a surprise. Another post about being jealous of those who have more than you.

nah, just sharing my experience of a store that gets lots of accolades for what it is (as it should), but the people that worked there SUCKED.

Why were you dealing with staff? I never dealt with them. I would just walk in, browse, and pick up what I wanted.

I tried applying there ages ago and oh, my God...they had the most obnoxious application process. There was actually a literature test on the application asking you questions about the most obscure writers and works. Like, seriously, it seemed as if they only wanted graduate students majoring in literature to work at that store. Ironically, the people "lucky enough" to got hired probably got paid peanuts for the trouble. I still laugh about it.

I used to sell back my books back there, but they treated you like you were a junkie trying to make money for a fix. I found that obnoxious.
