I'm curious to know if this is legal to do.. i don't take the trains that often, but in the past I had bought fare swipes from guys selling them at the turnstiles, for like a dollar.. even if you have your own metrocare it is still cheaper. I don't think the person selling is committing a crime, neither is the buyer?

Selling swipes IS a crime I believe. I thought about selling swipes MANY times, but figured that would be a bad decision. I often always swipe people in for free with my metrocard, which is NOT illegal.

Selling swipes is illegal, I don't know about buying though

I have a friend who was so cheap that he used to make us wait 17 minutes so he can sell a subway swipe for a dollar.

My only qualm with swiping random people in though is that one day it could be that person who pushes someone onto the tracks. Imagine being the person who swiped THAT person in!? ugh Or someone running from a crime they just committed?

Selling is illegal, I don’t know about buying. Offering or accepting a FREE ride from someone is completely legal. Soliciting a ride however is not. So the best thing to do is if you see someone kind of standing around looking sad by the turnstiles just ask them if they need a ride

If you have an unlimited fare card it’s not illegal to swipe for someone else. I sometimes swipe for other people when I get out as it’s not illegal, but to sell, I’d never do.

This is ridiculous. This like if I said that my only problem working at the hospital I work at is that one day I might end up treating somebody who then goes on and a commits a crime. Like what? Not my problem or responsibility what someone does afterward. But swiping someone in is the right thing to do.

No, it's not.

"Requesting a swipe on another straphanger's unlimited MetroCard is not technically a violation of MTA policy. According to the authority, riders only have to wait until their own ride is complete before passing off the favor. But the ask violates two NYPD rules—it counts as "begging or panhandling," and can impede "free movement of passengers."

legal? who cares anymore, DeBlasio does not want the NYPD to bother you

Go ahead and steal from the MTA, it's all good. If you need to take a leak there are plenty of city approved corners inside the subway car. If you must #2 then any bench is also approved
