Looking to convert my 1 family into a 2. Im located in queens ny. I was wondering if anyone knew if I needed to get a separate gas meter and electric meter installed. Any info is much appreciated.

You have to get approval from department of building and department of planning for approval on zoning law. Good luck!

each apartment should have its own electric and cooking gas bill, so yes, you will need to install separate meters. Do it right the first time!

I’m in the midst of changing the Certifiacate of Occupancy from 1 to 2 family at the moment. You’ll need an architect to submit plans to the city. The electrical in the house has to be brought up to code, which likely means a licensed electrician in the picture, which means you might as well get a separate meter installer.

No need for department of zoning/city planning. Your house must be in a zone that allows for 2 family homes. Also - sprinklers might be required due to the fire code. Again, this is why an architect needs to be involved.

Thank you all. I already have the plans in and in the process for the C of O. I was just asking if it was mandatory to have separate meters. Thanks again

I see. Regarding a separate gas meter, it’s not required but you can’t have a gas line/stove (at least at inspection time) for the new unit.
