Hi everyone, I am relocating back to NYC after many decades away. I have by sheer good luck found a wonderful person in NY who isn't the traditional apartment broker -- she actually works with you to find the right place for you and doesn't pull the kind of crap that I have heard about regular brokers. So I'm excited to see what she comes up with for me.

My budget isn't very large at the moment and I am a little anxious about finding a place I can afford. I'm thinking perhaps $1600 for a studio or one-bedroom. The "broker" had mentioned that there may be some options in the Bronx that will fit those parameters.

I will be in the city this weekend for a workshop and thought I would take some time to walk around and get a feel for some neighborhoods, only I haven't a clue as to where to start. Gonna be focusing on the Bronx this trip, so would like some suggestions (perhaps two or three or four) as to (safe and possibly in my general price range) neighborhoods to take a look at. This is NOT an apartment-hunting trip, just a kind of "tourist in NY in advance of relocation" trip.

Thanks in advance for your thoughtful ideas.

That's not a bad budget for The Bronx, you should be able to find something in most of the neighborhoods (for now)

It seems like you can get 1 bedrooms for around that price in most Bronx neighborhoods.

I can't tell if you want to be in the Bronx from your post.

You can rent in the other boroughs too for $1600.

It would be helpful if you listed what your commute would be like and other things of interest. Safety? Commute to? Transportation options? Driving?

For rent, I actually am finding south Brooklyn (Bath Beach, Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights, Madison, Gravesend, etc.) along the D cheaper than the Bronx that's not in the ghetto. $1600 could get you a small 2bd. I see one for $1500 at 1535 80th St in Dyker Heights right now. $1600 at 75 Bay 40th St in Gravesend too.

If I weren't paying $1600 to live in Manhattan, Lower East Side, I'd be looking there for rent, and the Bronx to buy. Unless of course your work is in the Bronx, uptown Manhattan, Westchester County, etc.
