Speaking of "Europeaness", I found a place via social media that does the whole free food thing (aperitivi) and you just pay for the drinks. I forget the name of the place, but I'm shocked any place would do such a thing given how expensive rent is here. In Italy it is fairly common. They may serve seafood dishes or whatever they want and you pay for each drink. Well worth it too. I have to try this place out and report back.

Report back how the experience is.

All the water in NYC just gives it a different feel, most European cities are more inland...

The street grid is classic American... the streets themselves are wide one ways with some huge boulevards here and there.

Architecture is just a older North eastern USA city style...

So basically, nothing like an European city...

Basically just an American city on steroids, because that's what it is.

I've been to Berlin and Copenhagen. Berlin sort of reminded me of New York a bit. Copenhagen didn't at all.

NYC does have a lot in common with London. Both are major financial capitals. They both have extensive transit systems of both below ground trains and buses. Also they both have lots of museums, theaters/shows and other cultural exhibits. Although both cities are English speaking, they both have large ethnic communities (that speak other languages) due to their immigrant and former immigrant (meaning descendants) populations.

Aside from the obvious difference that NYC has with European cities, NYC is more dense with many more skyscrapers and everything including roads are bigger (then again everything in the United States feels bigger) I feel nyc still has a European feel to it, that I can’t completely describe in words. NYC really does feel London. Paris doesn’t feel like NYC too much. Amsterdam, maybe.

Your thoughts?

No. You are hardly the first, and will not be the last.

I think lower Manhattan, particularly the West and East Village, feel especially European. That is the oldest part of the city, with many 18th century buildings that are built off the grid, on narrow, curved and cobblstoned lanes.

There are many buildings with Dutch step roofes - both in NYC, the Hudson Valley and NJ.

I do think Boston has a more European feel, aesthetically, than NYC. It is older, more historical, more quaint through and through, greener as well (NYC lacks in that area) and cleaner also. It is also quite walkable, as it's smaller than NYC.

That being said, I think culturally NYC is the most European-feeling because it's really the port of entry for many immigrants, and thus it has more of an international feel rather than a mainland American feel. It is thus more cosmopolitan and more sophisticated culturally.

I don't know if that is because perhaps the people who built Montreal really wanted to make it feel like it was really French.

I was talking to a friend about it and I was saying how I feel Montreal feels more French probably because they wanted to make up for it since they are not in France anymore. He agreed.
To answer your question about Italy.

While one can never say never, European nations grant citizenship by nationality, not race. Lots of Latin Americans who have an Italian grandparent get Italian citizenship. A person could have three black grandparents and one Italian grandparents and still be granted Italian ancestry. Nationality is more important than race, and ancestral and linguistic ties are more important. And good grief if you can live in the US under Trump you can go to Italy.

I don’t know Italy that well but I do know Spain and Portugal. Americans love to promote only bad news about other countries and are things get distorted way out of proportion.

Some NYC neighborhoods do have an European air, the west village, forest hills, historical Harlem, and even some streets in Park Slope, but not the whole city.

this is 100% true, and sometimes is hard for Americans to understand, Nationality is the center of European citizenship and is passed down the line by blood, not place of birth, race is not a factor. In the USA the system is "jus solis" citizenship is granted by place of birth and moderately by blood. Millions of Latin Americans have European citizenship its very common.
