Having been to 46 states and lived in 5-6, I can tell you that our reputation comes from NY’ers tendency to believe they are better than everyone else.
NYC, specifically Manhattan is a $hit hole. I've been to all the big cities in this country and with the exception of Vegas it's the worst city I've stepped foot in. I don't know what the OP sees in this city. Once you get passed your honeymoon phase and really look behind the curtain you'll see the rampant homelessness, filth, nasty people and extremely high rent prices. On top of that the city has no soul. You need to open your eyes OP.
It's totally fine if you have a handgun in your house for self-defense, but wtf do you need an AR-15? That's not a gun that an average person should own
This country is mind boggling to me because of this.
I won't give my opinions on this matter specifically, but NYC gives me a piece of mind from what's going on in the rest of the country. I find our issues differ greatly from what the rest of the country ails from and I'd rather have them then what I see vicariously through my family. That being said, I'm still American and that's been bothering me. I'm not proud to be from America, but I'm proud to live in NYC, and I find that a problem. I'm looking at positions in other countries, as well as the MEXT scholarship for Tokyo University for a masters degree, as maybe I need some fresh air. I find every time I leave for Tokyo, Japan I feel at ease, but when I come back it's all Trump, guns, cars, etc.
However, I don't want to give up my rent stabilization, as expensive as it is. Maybe we'll secede and become the Signapore of America lol. I can only dream my crazy dreams.
I remember after 9/11 some woman in Indiana was quoted by the NY Times saying, "It's nothing but a city full of sin and they got what they deserved." It provided a bit of comic relief at a horrible time.
I had a coworker from Indiana who didn't come in that day. I sent her the article with a note saying "Claim your peeps!"
I don't think that is/was a common attitude, though. Hope not, anyway.
Negative? The rest of the country likes to poop on NYC at times but they know there is no equal to this city in the US.
NYC is what connects the US to the rest of the world in a more figurative sense.
