The head of Miami's public school system has been tapped as the next chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, sources within Mayor de Blasio's administration said.

Alberto Carvalho, the superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, will replace current Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña -- who is retiring -- in the coming weeks, sources said. The announcement has not yet been made publicly.

Carvalho has served as the top educator in Miami-Dade County Public schools -- the nation's fourth largest school system -- since 2008, and is well known nationally among educators and considered a run for Congress in 2017, according to NBC 6 South Florida.

According to his biography on the Miami-Dade schools website, Carvalho was the named the 2014 National Superintendent of the year and is the winner of the 2016 Harold W. McGraw, Jr., Prize in Education and was named the 2016 Superintendent of the Year in 2016 by Magnet Schools of America.

He also appointed himself the principal of the iPrep Academy, a magnet school in the system.

Carvalho will take helm of the nation's largest school district as Mayor de Blasio works to continue to implement sweeping school system reforms, including full-day child education for every 3-year-old in the city and free school lunches for all 1.1 million public school students in the five boroughs.

In a stunning surprise, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s pick for schools chancellor backed out Thursday, a day after being named to run the nation’s largest school system.

Alberto Carvalho said he would stay in Miami, where he is schools superintendent.

Mr. Carvalho spent the morning listening to a parade of Miami residents begging him to stay during a meeting streamed live on Thursday.

The decision marks a major embarrassment for Mr. de Blasio, who announced Wednesday night that he named Mr. Carvalho, superintendent of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, as his pick to succeed Carmen Fariña after a lengthy search process.

Mr. Carvalho said he broke a commitment to an adult to keep a promise to children. “My heart started beating harder and faster than my mind,” he said.

“I want to thank Mayor de Blasio, I want to thank New York,” he said. “That is once again an open job...one that I would have cherished.”

At first it seemed like Mr. Carvalho was treating the emergency school board meeting in Miami as a farewell tour, as dozens of parents, teachers, students and other leaders heaped praise on his leadership in public.

“He was a Yes for a week+, until he was a No 15 minutes ago,” Mr. Phillips tweeted. “Bullet dodged.”

When Mr. de Blasio announced his choice Wednesday evening after what he called “our extensive national search,” John Schuster, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade school system, confirmed that Mr. Carvalho had been named chancellor but added that Mr. Carvalho “has not yet accepted and will not be making public comments on this matter until he addresses the board he has worked for for 10 years” on Thursday.

Well, that's awkward.

Also, was Miami ever known for its great public schools? Did they actually do an amazing turnaround in recent years or something?

BdeB is a lame duck mayor who is term limited out in three years. It then follows whoever replaces him might very well want to make changes including installing their own pick for chancellor.

The guy has a stead gig in Miami and seems set to remain for long as he wishes and or they will have him; why give all that up to come to NYC and face an uncertain future?

It would be like quitting one steady and good job where you're appreciated and so forth, to take up another position where your immediate supervisor or whatever will be gone in a few years.
