Hi,

I'm currently working as an executive assistant to the VP of a non-profit organization. At my current position I have experience in in purchasing, clerical work, and HR functions. However, i'm currently only making $44K a year, which is obviously too low to live in this city. I have a bachelors degree in business administration with a concentration in HR management. I've had a few interviews for HR related jobs but I haven't been able to obtain any offers yet.

My question is: If not HR what jobs can I get with the degree that I have?

Also, should I go back for my masters in accounting and become a CPA?

I'm feeling a bit stuck and would like some advice on how to move forward.

Thank you.

Have you already tried asking for a raise in the meantime? What are you looking to make?

How much experience do you have? 5 years+ is normally 50k-60k

HR is not my specialty, but I see you're working for a nonprofit. That may be what's limiting you.

Can you look into doing the same type of work for a company that's in an industry that pays well? Financial services, maybe, or banking?

Your bigger problem might be that the overall market for executive assistants is not good. As technology continues to develop, executives can do more for themselves. So based on that, I would encourage you to expand into another line of work. Accounting is a great field now, but that also runs the risk of being automated in the future.

Op I'd love to know where you live. In SWMO you would be lucky to make $10 an hour.

This was my first job out of college. I only took it so I can earn more experience.

Well Rome wasn't built in one day. You should be looking for side gigs in the meantime until you have the experience to move on. A side gig could perhaps bump you up 5 - 10 k a year.
