You're kids have one foot already out the door. Your youngest will be in college in five years from now. They're not gonna hang with you in suburbia post-college and you a Manhattanite will end up being bored out of your mind. Not only that, but all your neighbors will treat you like an outsider and shun you because you haven't lived there since they landed on Plymouth rock. You're gonna want come back. Only then, whatever holding you have now will have gone up by 5x the amount and you won't have the funds to come back. Don't go.
Well not all of Long Island is super bougie like that. My town is populated largely by ex-NYC people.
Do you mean being white? I feel like a white native New Yorker living in Bushwick or Bed Stuy would still be viewed as a transplant by the anti-gentrification activists.
The white native NYers in Bushwick or Bed-Stuy are likely from Ridgewood, and are not viewed as transplants. They are the "white boys from Queens." People of any color in Bushwick or Bed-Stuy or Ridgewood that are from the NYC suburbs are indeed transplants, and can easily tell the difference between them and a white boy from Ridgewood.

I meant they are all viewed as white gentrifiers regardless of where they're from.

No they aren't. If they are from Long Island, or say even Bayside or Little Neck, they are white gentrifiers. If they are from Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth, Woodhaven or Ozone Park, they are just white boys. There is certainly a difference, and it is noticable.

My kids are a little younger (oldest heading to middle school in a couple of years), but I totally get your point. The boredom part is my greatest fear; I'm afraid I will feel cut off from the "real world." And you're spot on about the kids not visiting us in suburbia. Good point and one that I often overlook when I fantasize about having a backyard.
Moved back and forth between Brooklyn (ENY, Bushwick, and Bedstuy) and Far rock.
Moved south for a little while (hated it)
Now i’m back in Brooklyn, but it’s not the same
Yeah, that looks like the one. My friend from Sao Paulo said it was pretty legit in style, but the ingredients were more Italian than what you'd find in Brazil.
That was a fun night. July 4th and it was beautiful, then it started pouring and we ran back to the end of the S to eat at O'sake. That place for some reason was playing music from Touhou which reminded me of the raves I go to in Tokyo.
Far Rock is fun, if the commute wasn't hell (for me) I wouldn't mind getting one of those bungalows. I don't miss much of anything from Chicago, but the bungalow style I find just gorgeous.
Anyways, bowing out from this thread. Not native and I won't call myself a newyorker, but after 8ish years (as of May, my math is bad) I probably ain't leaving except temporarily if I get a position/placement in Asia/Europe.
