I took a yellow cab in Manhattan the other day and the driver was playing the weirdest music ever, it was this purely instrumental, very syncopated kind of music with only one instrument in it. I don't know how anyone could possibly enjoy it, but I'm very curious to find out what that was.

I couldn't figure out what part of the world the driver was from, I'm guessing somewhere in Eastern Europe

What kind of instrument did it sound like? A reed instrument? How would you describe the tempo?

It was hard to tell, if I had to describe the timbre I'd say "dead accordion". But I don't think it was actually an accordion.

The tempo was quick, but choppy.

There are many types of instrumental music, ranging from weird abstract compositions to noise and drone music. Certain instramental genres are used for concentration or background music. As a fan of instramental music this thread stood out to me. You should have asked him, most people will enjoy talking about things they are fans of.

You may be able to find what you heard or close to it on youtube. Many channels of unusual styles of music genres.
