Speaking from personal experience, these places are cheap for a reason. Upstate NY has an atrocious climate, lack of employment opportunities (especially Syracuse, it's rust belt after all), lack of amenities, high crime, and a much lower quality of life
Most of the country is "cheap". NYC and San Francisco are just super expensive, with some other places also being expensive
Did you live off-campus? Being off-campus you get to see the depressing part of the city that doesn't make it on the brochures
No but I regularly went to Binghamton proper. I really didn't think it was depressing, just different. NYC and Long Island have worse areas in my opinion.
In fact I actually would live in Binghamton if I landed a good job there and if it had more to do for people that aren't college students.

Alright, I think we have different tastes then. It was fun at first but then got old quickly, especially living off-campus
