I submitted a similar post on regarding yard access. The basement in the building i live in is always open. Tenants have been using it as additional storage space for years. Landlord recently sent a letter stating we have 30 days to remove our items as locks will be changed and everything will be thrown out. Is this legal? Can we fight somehow? Again lease has no informatyion regarding basements just strictly apartment.

Did you ask the LL if you could store stuff down there, or you just took it upon yourself to put your stuff there without asking....

It's probably legal, and it's not a great arrangement if it's always open. Maybe your LL worries about liability issues. Or fire hazards.

I suggest you band together with a bunch of your neighbors and write him a polite letter, or ask to go over to his office for a meeting, and see if you can work things out.
