Someone at the Strand just told me that Zagat has stopped publishing their restaurant review books - and presumably will only have everything online.

Funny, I fought against Zagat reviews, because I felt the more descriptive long reviews, like in the NYT, were far more useful. But I eventually came to depend on the quickie numerical ratings that Zagat used. But online is terrible for this kind of stuff! It entails constantly clicking in and out, and that's find if you're looking up one item, but not if you want to skim a large territory.

I could understand it if they stopped publishing in other cities - but NYC?!?!?

Dammit.

Surprised to hear that -- while I like to use sites from Yelp to the Michelin Guide, Zagat was always a big part of the restaurant review list. The Zagat guides are pretty respectable.

The best, of course, are when you have detailed reviews by local reviewers, like this diligent guy:

Do they have an app? And if they do it’s likely designed to be more efficient and easier to navigate than the print version.
