i think youd be alright in these neighborhoods in the middle of the day.....white teachers, delivery men, pharmacist, dentist ect go to these neighborhoods everyday and are left alone.....im sure you can carry yourself without looking like a dumb tourist, that'll be another accomplishment for you......youll be able to say you walked through some of the worst projects in new york unmolested

What a difference a few years make that this list is now much shorter, removed from the list:

Manhattan: East Harlem (Partially), Central Harlem, West Harlem, Inwood (slowly but surely), Washington Heights (Slowly but surely), LES projects (can you count projects anywhere?? Chelsea has projects. even city hall has PJ's)

BK: Bushwick, Crown Heights, Bedford Stuyvesant. (looks like ENY is next up)

Queens: Far Rockaway (now hipster summer hangout), Queensbridge projects (again can you count the projects, astoria and LIC which surrounds QB have been gentrified).

Bronx: Mott Haven (the south end in Port Morris and now Alexander ave. are currently beginning to gentrify)

In regards to Washington Heights, west of Broadway is a wrap already.

Rockaway Beach is the hipster summer hangout - Far Rockaway has quite a ways to go before it will be hipster, if ever.

As much as gentrification is all the rage, there are tons of places in NYC you won't find a transplant walking around. In general a lot of places still look the same or worse especially places where not much transportation is nearby and not much police protection.

Most of NYC is non-gentrified and very working class.
