I cemented over my backyard when I moved in. Then started buying containers of all sizes and started planting all types of shrubs, trees, and flowers with various sucess. NYC is a hard place to grow. Extreme highs and lows. I am mesmirized by plant life during the spring and summer. In NYC its amazing how lush some back yards can be and offer terrific sanctaries from the City grime. What do you guys grow. Any pics ?

Over the last 18 years I have planted to difering levels of success roses, hydragneas, hollies, various types of Firs. I have tried tomato, lavender, mint, parsley, cilantro. Now, Im lazy, I buy flower arrangments of petunias and other annuals for color. I spend about 300 a year on flowers that will last the season and use as much rain water that I harvest during heavy rains in a large plastic garbage can that I fill and use to hydrate the plants during dry spells. I will try to upload some pics. I know of people who grow veggies and herbs on fire escapes. I would love to see what others are up to.
I have a climbing rose bush and a rhododendron in containers. All my other winter resistant perennials are planted in the ground. I have mostly annuals and ferns in containers.
With the tight spaces here in NYC it is good to go with shade lovers and climbers. Containers are good because you can move them to the sun for proper flowering.
I love gardening!! I had a teeny tiny space that I planted last year. It wasn't a container but may as well had been. I planted cilantro, tomatoes, peppers, thymes, eggplants and basil. I dumped a cheap bag of soil and nature's bed organic raised bed plant food. My plants grew like weeds!! I was supplying my neighbors wit herbs and vegetables all summer. By August I was exhausted and stopped harvesting. I couldn't keep up.
You have to water and feed your plants more often when you plant in containers.
I have amazing luck with outdoor plants. Not so much indoor ones.
I planted hydrangeas, azaleas, kniphofia (red hot poker) in the past two years.
I have so many bearded iris and day lilies. I constantly share with my friends. These two literally grow anywhere in any condition. I planted them in the driveway in some left over sand and they just flourish (even after I have driven over them multiple times).
Rose bushes, peonies, muliple types of hostas, coral bells, solomon's seals, asiatic lilies and many more. I plant in groups of staggering bloom. This way I always have something blooming.
Havent seen choral bells sold in a while. Those are very hearty.
At our previous house I would have my husband going crazy driving me around to nurseries. Now I go to home depot. They always have coral bells. They actually have a very diverse selection of plants and the plants are good quality. 2 of the Home depots that I go to are supplied by growers whose main office is located on long island. I don't know where they grow their plants though. But they also supply the smaller nurseries.
I also wait until mid june, july to purchase plants when they are discounted. You can buy rhizomes and bulbs for deeply discounted prices.
