Taking the subway from Brooklyn to Manhattan (New York, Fulton: transfer to, college)

I'm coming to New York this summer for an internship in Manhattan. I'm considering my cheapest housing options from studenthousing.org, and I found a place that has what I need and is a little cheaper but it's in Brooklyn. I would be saving $500 for the summer versus the options in Manhattan (to a poor college student that's a big deal) Is it worth the savings and how long will it take me to get from the Clark St. Station in Brooklyn to Columbus Circle in Manhattan during rush hour?

It estimates it will take about a half hour. I have a friend who lives very close to Clark St, nice area.

From Clark Street it will take approximately 30 minutes maybe a little less. You can either catch the 2 or 3 at the Clark Street station and transfer to the A at Fulton Street or the 1 at Times Square. You can also walk over to Old Fulton Street and catch the A train at High Street. From there it is about 8 stops on the express train.

If you take the 2 or 3, you don't need to transfer to the A. You can take the 2-3 to Times Square and transfer to the #1 (stops @ Columbus Cir.) directly across the platform. They run much more frequently than the A, and changing trains is much, much easier.

You can even change trains at Chambers St. (again, just across the platform), where you'll probably get a seat (!). It will add an extra 8-10 minutes or so to your trip.
