I read an article. Some years ago the article said they black Caribbeans and Africans are out pacing black Americans in all areas of education. My thing is. If you want special privileges for black Americans. Check off a box and those that be will get more points on exams. Africans, Caribbeans and afro Latinos did not experience or have historical damages from Jim crow, slavery and other forms of segregation. The only problem non American blacks faced was colonialism and remnants of it.
Right, there's less of a concentrated baggage, not just in identity and self-perception or how others perceive them, but also real financial, social and environmental harm wrought over the centuries. It's also partially why I think the racist overtones people argue these things along their limited understanding of genetics are bunk since most slaves brought over were from West Africa and West African immigrants are among the academically and professionally highest-achieving demographic in the US.
There's a massive catalogue of generational bull**** that AAs have had to deal with, during slavery and afterwards. It's great to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps, but that's pretty hard when generations of that bull**** left you shoeless and with most of that history with someone else's boot stepping on your neck.
If there were a strong body of evidence that this reconfigured admissions was actually going to work, that communities doing well were going to come out about on par and especially disadvantaged communities were going to come out of this much better, then I'd be totally for this. I don't think that's true though, so like I said, I think the motivation is right, but the implementation isn't.

Are you sure Jamaican kids are really doing that much better than AAs?

I don't think they should get any special privileges. Many of my friends that are African American that went to Vanderbilt did not get any special privileges and they did fine in life. Jews and Asians as minorities tend to be test better and value education at a higher level historically but many Africans and Latinos are doing better in that regard as well.
Yea, getting data sets is hard. Good work so far though.
Bronx Science in this year’s US New Rankings is actually at number 5 among specialized high schools and number 8 among NY (city and state) public high school overall. Ranks one through thirteen for NYS high schools all went to NYC public high schools with several NYC public high schools following close behind.
I think the good news is that performance in NYC schools, specialized or not, high school or not, has been improving steadily and this across all demographics. It's part of why I think this admissions process overhaul isn't a death knell (and unrelated, but unlikely to fully happen) for specialized high schools nor do I think it's the most sensible step in trying to get NYC school kids to do better overall across all demographics.
The mayor should go after hunter college high school it is 80% white and asian, has an admission test, and is graduating 50 out of 200 to ivy league schools.

Nah, the mayor shouldn’t be goin after any school. He should be trying to make the best steps possible with the knowledge available to improve the entire system with the resources that he has. His administration has done alright on this front so far, but this one is a misstep.

Yeah but that's a good question. Hey. Why is he leaving Hunter alone?

It’s not one of the specialized high schools. There are a lot of screened public schools that are not specialized high schools. He’s changing those that go by SHSAT alone and Hunter doesn’t do that.
Hunter and NEST+m are the ones that are really hard to get into. That and Manhattan Bridges in a very different way, but that’s a whole other can of worms.

Oh, I didn't know that. Thanks! I only know with Hunter, the exam starts early. 7th grade instead of 8th. Unless that's changed.
I'm wondering if there's any testing involved with LaGuardia (School of the Performing Arts) other than auditions.
I've got some googling to do.
I recall at the time, the application packet I received contained Stuy, Bronx Sci, B'klyn Tech and LaGuardia(!) all in one book.
I've never heard of NEST+m so googled it. Here are their demographics for anyone that's interested.
The school population comprises 9% Black, 11% Hispanic, 42% White, and 33% Asian students.
The student body includes 0% English language learners and 1% special education students.
Boys account for 48% of the students enrolled and girls account for 52%.
