I'm planning on taking the Tech Licence next week and I'm wondering what options are there for Ham Radio in congested NYC. I live in a coop in Queens and have a terrace/balcony.

My only option for an antenna is a MagLoop on the terrace, or I can possibly throw an End-Fed Antenna to a tree about 25 feet from my 7th floor balcony.

Anyway, any Hams out there in the boroughs? I'm interested in QRP also.

I also have a 2 band RT radio and listen to VHF-UHF.

Thanks.

for most repeaters you can use a mag mount on an air conditioner . for the lower frequencies the loop antennas are the most practical choice .with a co-op you have to be careful of complaints . tvi can be a big issue transmitting on the lower bands , not uhf and vhf though .
i had a loop at one time and tvi was horrible no matter how i tried filtering it ..

A mag mount like this? https://www.amazon.com/Tram-1185-Ama.../dp/B0045EQUBK

My building is a concrete RF sponge. A few steps away from the balcony and into the apartment and I loose like 50% of the signal on the Baofeng RT I'm using.

The TVI you experienced. How was that manifested? Did the radio you have interfere with TV's of others, or others TV's interfered with your radio? This article mentions filers to remedy TVI: TVI - Amateur-radio-wiki You think these might be helpful in what you experienced?

Last question- what radio, loop, and other equipment did you have?

I want to give this a go, but want to try to avoid as many pitfalls as possible.

yes that is a magmount ,you can get them for uhf and vhf .

the tvi was me effecting the tv's. i tried every filtering system i could . the power at that height level being in line with the tv's just obliterated them .

I think a majority of my neighbors are likely using spectrum cable for TV and not over air.

as long as it does not work it's way in to the power you should be fine. depending on wattage you could make the power dirty . it can also be hard to filter .

I've been looking at QRP transceivers- low power 5W and under.

This is one. There are a couple of others I've been eyeballing....

JD. This weekend if Field Day and there are 62 clubs/groups participating in NY.
If you aren't familiar with Field Day, groups set up stations operating off back up power (Battery/Generators) and use temporary/portable antennas. The event last for 24 hrs and groups trying to make as many contacts with other groups participating. It's a good time to look at different radios and antennas and if they are a good group they will let you get on the air too.

Go to: Field Day Station Locator

Looks like there are 5 within 15 miles of Queens.

Setup usually begins around 8-9am on Saturday and most groups are always looking for able bodies to help setup and take down. Operating begins at 2pm local time.
