That link has directions via the express bus.

Although Wednesdays are admission free, I would avoid that day because the zoo is overcrowded and some of the exhibits might be closed.

I'm a conservatory member and only really go to Central Park Zoo for the petting zoo area. If it wasn't for my kids I don't think I would go at all. It gets pretty packed and the larger animals seem to be hiding most of the time.
