Hello! I am moving to Brooklyn next month for my job. I've found a spot near the Chauncey St JMZ station. Specifically, Moffat between broadway and central. I am a young woman, a cyclist. I am used to living in urban environments, get to know my neighbors, and welcome diversity, but I see really mixed things about this area online. Would love to get some first hand knowledge of what this area is like!
I lived in that area by the Gates station in 2015. It was ... interesting. I'm black and my boyfriend is white. Whenever he traveled in the area without me, he was harassed by at least one person. He was never physically threatened but he reported feeling unwelcome. There is a heavy police presence in the area and it's needed. Gunshots at least three times during my year there. I also saw a man shortly after he was stabbed near my closet bodega. Blood everywhere. I moved once my lease was over.

It's not completely gentrified yet.

Broadway to Central is a four block range - I would say the further from Broadway the better although in the past few years that area, along with neighboring Ocean Hill, has seen a lot of new arrivals and new construction. Salud is a nice new restaurant on Bushwick Ave. that opened a couple of years ago. You should be fine.
Even if there’s crime it’s not like when the bullets fly they’re hitting the gentrifiers. I wouldn’t be worried.
