Inexpensive day trip for my family is driving over to SI, parking, then taking the Ferry (free), then going to the Native American musuem ( free )and eating a meal at a eatery after walking around the FI district. What cheap day trips can you think of ?
I can only think of the obvious...SI ferry, Brooklyn Bridge, a day in Central Park, Prospect Park, the Met...NYGB on Saturday morning, Wave Hill is free certain days/times too...
it’s pretty cheap to take the ferry to Governors island, and during the summer there are a lot of activities there. Also you can rent bikes. Not sure how much that costs.
If you have a car, then head north for some hiking.
As NYC residents, there's always going to the Met and paying less than the suggested admissions. Have you and your spouse tried getting NYC IDs and getting the cultural institution benefits?

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Museum as well the Museum of the City of New York all have suggested contributions rather than fixed admissions for NYC residents. Besides that are plenty of other attractions that are free (or suggested contributions) on certain days (or times) of the week. The NYBG (in the Bronx) has free admission to the grounds on Wednesdays as well as 9-10am on Saturdays. The Brooklyn Botanical Garden has free admission on Tuesdays during July & August (according to their website).
Also holders of Bank of America debit or credit cards can get free admission to a few NYC attractions on the first weekend of every month. (Their list seems to change at the beginning of each year). For more information see: https://about.bankofamerica.com/en-u...=museums-on-us
Besides the NYC ID which has already been mentioned there is also the new cultural pass to those who hold any library card of the 3 NYC library systems: https://www.culturepass.nyc/
The NYC ferry is only $2.75 per ride and there are several stops with some nice parks. You could get on in East 34th St. or Hunters Point South and take it to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Walk around and enjoy ice cream and the carousel if you have little kids. There are some nice restaurants there as well.
There's also a ferry from Pier 11 to Rockaway Park, but I've never taken that one.
