What??!! Even if you ate there, and received full service, 15% tip on $18 is about $2.70.

I usually give food deliveries around 10% rounded up. So, in this case, 10% would be $1.80, which would be rounded up to $2.00.

Does you/your wife believe in giving tips for take out if you go and pick up yourself?

For an $18 order, $3 is fair game. It's not cheap, nor is it a good tip.

Delivering food (especially on a bike) isn't an easy job, and I respect people who do it. So unless they really mess something up or come super late, I'll give them $5-6 on a typical order. If i have people over and we're getting $100+ worth of food, then its more like $10-15. In the grand scheme of things, a few extra bucks will not make a difference to me but it will to the delivery guy.

One thing you guys don't get is $3-4 doesn't sound like a lot. But most of these guys are illegal immigrants and don't pay tax. And it adds up. 10-15 deliveries per day on average is probably the LEAST they'll get. At $50 a day in cash tips multiply that by 30 days in a month on average they are getting $1500 bare minimum. Rent costs $250 as they are sharing a 6 bedroom house with about 12+ fellow immigrants. They pool transportation expenses sharing a car, utilities etc. everything is subsidized and costs end up being very low, some even form a savings pool for unexpected expenses and when someone has emergency costs they can dip into the pool.

All these guys are doing for 5-7 straight years they are stacking at least $10k USD a year living a minimalist lifestyle. In Mexico you can get a freaking villa or 2 townhouses for $50-70k. Some of them even buy the property they are living in here in the U.S. by pooling that $10k multiplied by 12 people you got $120k a year. Take a look at most of the home owners in Elmhurst and Jackson Heights now - I bet you only 50% are American born at best.

A lot of people think illegals are living this harsh down trodden lifestyle I talk with these people and they are getting by big time. Their quality of life here is infinitely better. Most of these guys are happy all they have to do is bike around all day - In Mexico you don't have the same freedom - You can't just bike around delivering food there most times you'll get stuck up and robbed at least 3x-4x a week. It is incredibly safe here so they are just glad to not have to watch flying bullets as much even if it means delivering food to White people all day.

It beats farming the land breaking your back or dodging Cartel Junior gangsters all day long.

I know one Mexican guy in particular who came from a well off family who came here to get his Master's degree. He said when he came back he was surrounded by former campesinos who worked illegally in the U.S. for 10 years and could afford to live where he lived now. It really ain't no joke. Some have saved as much as $500k USD in 25 years. Tell me an American that has that much savings in the same time period working?

Not many, because most of them are over tipping.
