There has been Mexican growth throughout the East Coast. There are many Mexicans in the Midwest too, such as Chicago where they've lived for generations.
There are so many Mexicans living outside of The West that I don't even think living out West is important to them. Chicago and NYC hav hundreds of thousands of Mexicans in the city proper alone.
If anything, the East Coast might be better for recent Mexican arrivals because it's less saturated with Mexican labor and businesses.
I doubt they think that. I also think most Americans can actually tell Mexicans and Puerto Ricans apart
Harrypothead is right, the typical American (Blacks, Whites), they can NOT tell people from Spanish speaking countries/islands apart. They'll see Mexicans, PR, DR, Cubans, Latin Americans and assume they're all Mexicans, basically. The only areas where this is not typical of Americans is in NYC/NJ metro area and Miami (large Cuban population) - you'll have more people who know there are differences between those groups.
