LOL Vertically challenged means short. And the ones that sway but don't fall are on some kind of opiate... Heroin usually. Sad thing.

I use the term for both. In this case standing up. Yeah I had no clue what he was on. He was swaying, sometimes the knees would buckle but he always seem to straighten up only to start all over again.

Know and understand people have issues, fine. But many of these other so called "homeless" are straight up running game. Besides being professional panhandlers, many steal or do whatever else, so there are often mitigating circumstances as to why they are homeless.

Again people like Wild Card Steve who did everything right but got dealt a bad hand are one thing. But some of these other homeless their entire lives add up to "zero". Never worked, always on this or that welfare scheme, etc.... When that runs out and or government (finally) says "no more", they become "homeless".
Don't forget the airports. Some paperwork came across my desk once about the group who serves the 1500 homeless a year who stay at Newark Airport. I'm guessing LGA and JFK have the same issues.

Homeless at the airports... Interesting... Never had such issues flying out of JFK...

Hell no, you must of never went to california. Homeless people are everywhere. You can't find a bus stop in California without a homeless person sleeping there or sitting there.

I remember seeing a ton in San Diego and San Fran years ago. I'll be in San Fran next week - I'm curious to see what that will be like (from the sidelines of-course)

If the problem is just a job/housing issue, why is the homeless population 90% male?

I can walk blocks in my neighborhood without seeing a homeless camp, or even 1 homeless person.
That's the difference between SD and NYC. In this city we hide our homeless in shelters.
And then weed/drug addicted millennial want to move into places like SD/NYC, gentrify the place, and visually ignore all the crazy homeless people who gives the trees a run for their money in terms of urban setting.

That's a good question. What I do know is that in the black community, women are usually the bread winners and often times run single parent households, so there's that to consider. That means that you have more black men than women that are homeless. You do have some black women who are homeless but they have jobs, so they may not look homeless.

As for whites... I feel like it's more evenly split in terms of homeless women and men. I've seen both. I tend to see fewer Latinos, but when I do it's usually men. I think culturally it's about la familia and so that nucleus helps people not become homeless. As for Asians, I see a mix of women and men. I've been seeing this one Asian lady in Midtown now for several years, but I rarely see ones that look really destitute.

One of the earlier posts suggested building more homes to reduce homelessness?
You have to understand that there is a cause and affect in a controlled socioeconomic environment.

Let's say that more than enough homes were built to house everybody.
For this to happen the govenment/city would have to step in to make
it profitable for the contractor. " He ain't gonna do it for nothin, you feel me! "
One only builds home when he knows there is someone to buy it.
He won't take a chance of loss. Unfortunately not to many folks can go out a buy a home today.
Back to the city. They will make it profitable for the contractor to build homes with a guarantee to buy them
if no one else does. The buildings will be sold .The contractor makes a profit. On to the next job.
With so many homes finally built, rents would eventually drop meaning less profit for the new and current land owners
The city would have to give building owners tax breaks also to offset lower rents/lower profits.
Rents are now affordable for most except the really destitute.
The city will offer more incentives for the land owner to house the destitute.
The city will finally step in and build more low rise NYCHA buildings as the cherry on top of the ice cream.
Where is the money that was subsidized for the contractor, the landlord and NYCHA come from?
The city will raise the the taxes on the working class. It will go through the roof.
I can see it now. The homeless will be housed and the working class will now become the new homeless!
Pretty soon everyone will be homeless or damn near it.We will all be in the same boat. Can anyone say " Hello Socialism ?"
Let's be real. As goofy as my post sounds there is an element of truth that makes the hair on your neck stand up.
The only, and I mean only way to prevent the majority of homelessness is to create jobs, jobs, jobs.
That is the capitalist way to go,go,go, and get the wheels of this economy up and running again.
Until then, I suggest the housing for homeless squad go around in their pickups and give a lift to all the homeless up to Beverley Hills California
and have them sleep on mattresses in front of the homes of all those very, very wealthy actors and actresses.
Better yet let them all squat in those 40 or 50 room mansions. That will end homelessness and
I am sure that with all the crumbs that fall off their dinner tables at night, that my friends, would end hunger in America
once and for all.
