I notice some of the repellant products now use Picaridin instead of DEET. I have not tried it but I will buy it if I spot it. Has anyone tried it?

Aeran, I used DEET when it was first introduced and it was in only tiny concentrations. It didn't work any better then than it does now in whopping strengths, and it was just as repulsive.
I once wet my arm with DEET. a real puddle. A goddamn mosquito landed right in the puddle and bit me through it.

sasie,
I try to avoid females whenever possible.

I use 100% DEET only when I am in the forest, and only on limited parts of my body, ankles, wrists, and neck. Then I treat all my "forest" clothes and gear with permethrin.

In the suburbs, I'll use citronella candles if I am hanging out at a backyard BBQ. I don't think they work, but I am nostalgic about the smell. I might use OFF! if things are crazy.

In the city? Never use anything, though my suburban method might apply in some parts of the Bronx or the outer parts of the other boroughs. I assume big parts of Queens and SI in particular probably have pretty bad mosquitoes, at least as bad, if not worse, than Westchester.

They may stop biting, but then they go relax for a day or two and then come back.

I doubt that most Manhattanites aspire to live as people do in Colombian jungles.

I would happily give them all the blood they want, unfortunately they inject an anticoagulant which triggers a horrific immune response in some of us. Only Seventh Floor is immune.

Eventually the mosquitos stop biting once they take a certain amount of blood.
And then they go away and are replaced by 100 new hungry bastards.

Aeran, OFF ACTIVE contains 15% DEET. THat's too much for my liking. Even 5% DEET (oldest DEET preparations) makes me feel ill.

THis is my next trial balloon:

Maybe I'll go visit Seventh Floor in his swamp to test it.

Perhaps rubbing my skin with a smashed garlic clove might help. At least vampires will avoid me.

But it might be moot CL. I don't go to the hinterlands anymore and NYC is pretty mosquito averse.
But I will try garlic if I feel at risk. (I LOVE pasta aglia e olio.)

Let me know if REPEL works! I tried other natural repellants and nope. They don't do a thing.
7th Floor mentions beer repelling mosquitoes. Are you a beer drinker? Because I'm not.
