Beer DOES NOT repel mosquitoes.
I went on a picnic and my date counted my drinks (you know the type)...23 cans of cold beer on a broiling afternoon, with baseball yet. I got thoroughly bitten by mosquitoes and black flies. (Hospital next morning with a swollen leg that was getting blue lines. Judged a staph infection from the fly bites. Shot of penicillin and good to go.

Wow. Not good. Black flies bites are the worst. Worse than mosquito bites (that just itch). But black flies. No. My reaction is nothing like yours (it's just mad itchy and swells up leaving red welts) but I didn't have to go to the hospital (knock on wood)...yet.

Black flies are way worse than mosquitoes!
I went camping during the height of the black fly season (whoops) upstate and I looked like someone slugged me in the face (from the bites below my eye), my legs were swollen and my fingers were so swollen I couldn't take my rings off that generally slide right off. They were so bad we actually quit on a hike we intended to take because I couldn't take the constantly barrage of bugs when I need to focus on my footing and not falling backwards.
The mosquito bites make me super itchy but at least they don't cause the insane swelling.
And I drink a lot of beer whilst camping and can also attest to the fact that it does not keep anything away.
We rented a beach house in Holgate, NJ (Long Beach Island) a while ago. We were 1/2 block from the ocean. Day was fine, beach nice but then the wind shifted to a land breeze and the flies came, some near an inch long. One bit me and blood ran down my arm.
So, enough beach for me. I gathered my couple of things and headed to the house. A fly followed me with me violently trying to swat it away with my beach towel. Partner laughed. I began to run and the bastardly fly kept after me, across the sand, up and over the small dune and racing down the street...the fly kept at me. I ran up the stairs and into the house and slammed the screen door behind me with the big black fly bouncing off the screen but I was safe.
Partner said he would not have believed it had he not seen it.
There was an outdoor shower (which I usually LOVE) but to use it would have been suicidal.
We paid for a weeks rental...We drove back home on Wednesday, wasting a half week's rent.

Oh, they are aggressive. Far more than mosquitoes. Also, I read that individually they can bite repeatedly in rapid succession unlike mosquitoes.

Yeah. They swell up and turn into all sorts of different shades of pink. And they last for days!
As for beer, thanks for the input. I don't like beer so you saved me the hassle of having to drink it.
My mosquito bites swell into welts, an inch across and then the center bursts open leaving a volcanic type hole that oozes pus for days until it scabs over and slowly heals, usually after a week or two. I don't dare scratch it or the healing process must start all over again and I run the risk of a scar.
The older I get the worse the situation gets. As a kid I could get bitten without all the drama.
