I hope the old timer gets PAID. you need to handle the old timers with extra respect. Being that the arresting Officer Loo could probably be asian as well, knuckle head really needs to lose his job.

People jaywalk all around this city, cause one can always beat the charge. Another reason is that police will have a hard time 'ducking bottles and other items" while dealing with the public. Jaywalking is done with skills, not just throwing one self into the street. Crossing mid block needs to be down with care. these summonses get thrown out 9 out of 10 times in court. Been there.

Jay Walking is still a ticket that could be handed out. You can be flagged for it or even a whistle blown. Usually depends on where and when. However I agree Jay-walking can end up with a person being run-down. Especially with drivers following the lights and not looking. You got tons of people jay-walking every day. Personally walking/riding beside the highway is pretty much the same as jay walking but with no stop lights or walk signs.

The old timer should have had the decency of learning the language.

Twenty years ago, the rigid, right-leaning, law-and-order Mayor Giuliani announced that he was going to crack down and start ticketing jaywalkers for $50 a pop. Unthinkable, right? Jaywalking is not only part of the general NYC insouciance, but fits perfectly with our usually being in a rush.

Well, by an amazingly lucky coincidence, the first person to notably get ticketed was a woman named Brenda Barnes in midtown Manhattan. Like many New Yorkers, she was impatient to be on her way and was irritated enough to fight it. And by an incredible stroke of luck, she happened to have connections to Cardozo Law School, and her cause was immediately taken up by none other than Barry Schechter. The mayor, smart enough to realize he was facing a potential PR disaster, backed off immediately.

It's a good reminder that sometimes one person can make a difference. We should all be grateful to Ms. Barnes.

For the thrilling story:
Officer Apprehends a Perpetrator. The Charge Is Jaywalking.

Does Brenda Barnes jaywalk anymore?
