Unfortunately, Public Libraries are the only true quiet places left in New York City. It is up to us to help support their existence.
Once they are gone .................................................. ...........take your chances at coffee houses and fast food joints.
People pay for peace and quiet these days. The co-working space industry is BOOMING! I love and support libraries, but you won't find peace and quiet there anymore..

It may be a stretch, but if you can find a quiet corner of a hotel lobby, they’re open 24 hours. Restrooms, food and drink nearby, depending on the hotel. Just a thought.
Perhaps, when the midtown branch re-opens after renovations, they will resume being open until 11PM.
The Midtown branch (which I assume is one of the locations NYer23 is referring to) is currently open in a temporary space with the main research building diagonally across the street from the closed building that is currently undergoing renovations. It is open until 9PM I believe on weeknights.
The only other affordable quiet spaces to study assuming the weather is suitable (and during the daylight hours) are some of city parks. For example Flushing Meadows-Corona Park has large areas (especially on weekdays) where one can enjoy the relative quiet outdoors without too many people around (and there are areas with picnic tables to sit).
Thanks for the Reddit links. The continuing ed idea to gain access is something I should have thought of, because I was thinking of working with one CUNY school for a mentorship program in connection with my company.
