Yep! I thought the exact same thing. Someone smuggled it in and then it either escaped or they got spooked and dumped him/her there. Glad the other ducks seem to be friendly & accepting about it.

You see them in England. He should be o.k. in our climate. They are related to our mallards, which is why he seems to be accepted in their gang.

Please don't feed him.

Urgh. That is worse than well done beef. Medium rare for me.

Anyway, It is not unlikely that there is a population of Mandarin ducks on some upstate estate's pond, and this guy "flew the coop". These ducks are widely exported as ornamental semi-wild landscape animals, much like peacocks.
