Hard to say. Immigration is supposed to be dealt with on a federal level, but federal immigration policies definitely need some work. NYC is in some ways working with the cards that it’s been dealt. The idea of making it so that immigrants who came here illegally are willing to actually contact the police is sensible in some ways, but the corollary to that is it can also in ways abet illegal immigration. There essentially needs to be a reasonable national policy which I think can come from a better system that does better tracking and has more shorter term work permits, maybe opens up more legal immigration slots, a more transparent naturalization system, forgiveness set at a certain date so that immigrants who did come here through the old broken system and have been here for a long time have a pathway to normalizing their status, and a good relationship with Mexico to enlist them in curtailing border crossings. None of this is really that doable on NYC’s part. Immigration isn’t necessarily a bad thing—it’d probably be good if the country established certain areas be available as easier ways to earn “points” for immigration as a way of rebounding places that have had pretty drastic population drops. That’s something we do to some extent through the asylum process, but I think for those who are trying to come in on a work skills basis, that, too should be targeted in certain areas. Same with the pathways to a greencard we allow through a certain amount of financial investment.

I am pro increasing legal immigration, but definitely against illegal immigrants.

Whats crazy is how the Democrats basically co-opted the poor minorities to vote against their self-interest. People like Martin Luther King Jr were against immigration for a reason. Illegal immigrants compete vs poor working class NOT against the rich and educated. They put a strain on welfare and safety net systems competing for the same fixed amount of $$$, take away jobs from poor working class people, take away jobs from less educated, etc.

This paragraph explained it all.

And it serves as an early test of the relationship between new Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and President Donald Trump, who has already cut aid to Central America and vowed to halt all foreign aid to the region if the caravan wasn't stopped.

One good thing about the caravan is that it goes to show how people and governments of other countries respond when push comes to shove, and when its comes down to dollars and donuts.
